That leaves the toughest test of all: Clair, the Dragon-type master of Blackthorn City, who hands over the eighth and final Badge at the end of the arc spanning "Fangs for Nothing", "Great Bowls of Fire" and "Better Eight than Never". Along the way, Ash also wins a Pokémon Egg in "Extreme Pokémon" that hatches into an adorable Phanpy, and looks after a newborn Larvitar from "Hatch Me If You Can", doing everything he can to return it to its mother.
Team Rocket never gives up
True to form, Jessie, James and Meowth chase Pikachu into every last corner of Johto. But Season 5 also hands them bigger schemes: in the Whirl Islands, a ruthless Team Rocket scientist masterminds the capture of the young Lugia, forcing even our comic trio to reckon with methods far crueler than their own. Between two harebrained plans, Team Rocket remains the show's best source of laughs, from the debt collectors of "Dues and Don'ts" to every over-the-top motto recited from a hot-air balloon.
The Silver Conference: the summit of the season
Everything converges on Mt. Silver. After the torch-lighting ceremony of "A Claim to Flame!", Ash grinds through the qualifiers and the round-robin stage against fearsome opponents, before the matchup everyone came to see: a full six-on-six battle against Gary Oak in "The Ties That Bind" and "Can't Beat the Heat!", the magnificent payoff to a rivalry born in Pallet Town. Ash's road then crosses Harrison's in "Playing with Fire!", a spectacular clash that pits Charizard against Blaziken, before the tournament wraps up in "Johto Photo Finish".
