After a strong run at the Silver Conference in Johto, Ash decides to wipe the slate clean. He says goodbye to his traveling companions and boards a ferry to the faraway Hoenn region with only Pikachu at his side. In the very first episode, "Get the Show on the Road!", he crosses paths with May, a rookie Trainer who has just received a Torchic from Professor Birch. May is not actually that interested in Pokémon battles at first, but over the course of the season she discovers her true calling: becoming a Pokémon Coordinator and competing in Pokémon Contests, a brand-new discipline introduced in this season.
The duo is soon joined by Max, May's little brother and a walking Pokémon encyclopedia armed with his trusty PokéNav, and then by Brock, back on the road with his cooking pots and his big-brother wisdom. Together they crisscross Hoenn: Ash chases the region's Gym Badges while May trains for her first Contests. Season 6 tells both stories at once, through hard-fought wins, character-building losses and encounters that shape the rest of the series.

Ash and Pikachu: A Veteran Starting Over
In Hoenn, Ash is no longer a rookie, but he arrives with Pikachu as his only Pokémon. He rebuilds his team episode by episode: he catches Treecko in "Tree's a Crowd", befriends a scrappy Taillow, and takes in an overexcited Corphish in "Gone Corphishin". All three become cornerstones of his Hoenn squad.
May, the Rookie Coordinator
May is the big addition this season. Clumsy at first, she learns to catch her own Pokémon, including the Wurmple at the heart of "Which Wurmple's Which?". Her discovery of Pokémon Contests, her budding rivalry with the talented Drew in "Now That's Flower Power!" and her first competition in "Win, Lose or Drew!" give the season a second storyline that runs alongside Ash's gym challenge.
Max and Brock: The Glue of the Group
Max is too young to be a Trainer, but he makes up for it with an encyclopedic knowledge of Pokémon and of the region's geography. Brock slips right back into his role as the team's big brother: cook, caretaker and voice of reason. Along the way he adds Lotad and Mudkip to his own team.
Iconic Locations Across the Hoenn Region
Season 6 takes the group from Littleroot Town all the way to Mauville City, with three major Gym battles on the itinerary:
- Rustboro City, home of Gym Leader Roxanne: Ash earns the Stone Badge in "The Winner by a Nosepass" after a tense battle against her Nosepass.
- Dewford Town, the island Gym of Brawly: beaten in their first match in "Brave the Wave", Ash gets his rematch in "Just One of the Geysers" and claims the Knuckle Badge.
- Mauville City, where the electrifying Wattson awaits in "Watt's with Wattson?", the episode that closes the season with the Dynamo Badge.
Between those milestones, the series packs in memorable detours: the Pokémon Trainers' School, a mysterious cave, an abandoned ship, and the beaches of Slateport City, the stage for May's first steps into Contest life.
Team Rocket, Team Aqua and Team Magma: Triple Trouble
True to form, Jessie, James and Meowth follow our heroes all the way to Hoenn, still scheming to steal Pikachu and still blasting off again at the end of most episodes. The season gives them some genuine growth too: Jessie's Wurmple evolves into Cascoon and then Dustox, mirroring May's Wurmple becoming Silcoon and then Beautifly, a mix-up hilariously untangled in "Seeing is Believing!".
More importantly, Pokémon: Advanced introduces two far more dangerous criminal organizations: Team Aqua and Team Magma. Their rivalry bursts into the open around the Devon Corporation in "Stairway to Devon" and "On a Wingull and a Prayer!", laying the groundwork for a conflict that will run through the entire Advanced Generation arc.
