Pokémon Season 4, streaming free: the Johto road trip rolls on

The fourth chapter of the animated series, Johto League Champions, picks the Gold and Silver saga right back up where the previous season left it. Its 52 episodes, which aired in Japan across 2000 and 2001 before reaching English-speaking audiences from 2001, follow Ash, Misty and Brock along the roads of the Johto region. In between, Ash passes through Ecruteak City and its Ghost-type folklore, follows the coast down to Olivine City, then boards a boat for the island where the season's last Gym is waiting.

The through line never changes: collect the Badges needed to enter the Johto League. But the episodes of Pokémon Season 4 hand a huge share of their running time to standalone stories, from catching contests to improvised tournaments, by way of the villages and local festivals the trio stumbles into along the way. This is a season where the journey matters just as much as the destination.

Ash, Misty and Brock: the classic trio at full strength

Ash travels here with a team that is fully rooted in Johto. Pikachu is his constant, of course, backed up by Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile and Noctowl. The season marks a real milestone for his Grass-type starter: Chikorita evolves into Bayleef, and the new size that comes with it lands Ash in a string of mishaps that are equal parts funny and endearing.

Misty carries on with Togepi, whom she mothers relentlessly, and with her wildly unpredictable Psyduck, a bottomless source of comedy. Brock, meanwhile, gets one of the richest stretches of his whole career as a Trainer: his Zubat evolves into Golbat, then into Crobat, closing a partnership that started far earlier in the series. He also returns his Vulpix to its original Trainer, in an episode that says a great deal about his calling as a Breeder.

Three Gyms give the season its spine, and each one teaches Ash a different lesson.

The Plain Badge, in Goldenrod City

Facing Whitney, a Normal-type specialist, Ash learns the hard way that a harmless-looking Pokémon can be an absolute wrecking ball. Her Miltank flattens him before he works out a counter and walks away with the Plain Badge.

The Fog Badge, in Ecruteak City

In Ecruteak City, Morty and his Ghost-type Pokémon throw opponents at Ash that he simply cannot pin down. The arc leans into the supernatural and wraps up with the Fog Badge.

The Storm Badge, in Cianwood City

The season's final hurdle, Chuck, is a Fighting-type specialist with genuinely absurd physical strength. The duel that closes out Johto League Champions earns Ash the Storm Badge.

Team Rocket, between gags and festivals

Jessie, James and Meowth are still on the clock, still wearing improbable disguises, still building machines destined to explode. The season gives them more than a straight-man role, though: Jessie's Wobbuffet, as inconvenient as it is impossible to dislike, becomes one of the best running gags in the series and even gets episodes built around it. Team Rocket also makes the most of all those local fairs and festivals to keep infiltrating, and therefore to keep failing spectacularly.

Johto shows off its full range here. Goldenrod City and its radio tower open the season on a big urban backdrop, before the trio drifts toward moodier, more rural territory. Ecruteak City, a town built on tradition and legend, delivers one of the most memorable stretches of the run, while the coastal episodes already hint at what comes next. The journey ends out among the islands, somewhere between a lighthouse and a cliff face.

The season is also excellent at themed one-offs: catching contests, village festivals, hot spring detours and impromptu film shoots. More often than not, it is these side trips, rather than the official battles, that stick in the memory and give Johto League Champions its distinct identity.
