The badge quest finally resumes this season, with two major wins for Ash. In Violet City he takes on Falkner, the Flying-type Gym Leader, in "Fighting Flyer With Fire!": a daring aerial duel that earns him the Zephyr Badge, his very first badge in the Johto League. Later, in Azalea Town, Bug-type expert Bugsy stands in his way in "Gettin' the Bugs Out!": Cyndaquil turns the tables on a powerful Scyther to claim the Hive Badge.
It is also a season of landmark captures. Ash catches a Heracross in "A Sappy Ending!", takes in a stubborn Chikorita in "Chikorita Rescue!", adds a Cyndaquil in "Good 'Quil Hunting!", then wins a rowdy Totodile in a battle against Misty in "The Totodile Duel!". The cherry on top: in "Fowl Play!", he catches a rare-colored Noctowl, the first Shiny Pokémon ever seen in the anime.
Team Rocket: lurking as always
Jessie, James, and Meowth naturally follow the trio into Johto, where their twisted schemes keep backfiring in spectacular fashion. They strike Professor Elm's lab the moment they arrive, then spend the season rolling out one absurd machine and ridiculous disguise after another, including the giant tank of "Tanks A Lot!".
This season also gives birth to one of the show's longest-running gags: in "Tricks Of The Trade!", Jessie accidentally trades her Lickitung for a Wobbuffet, who will keep popping out of his Poké Ball at the worst possible moment for hundreds of episodes to come.
Heartbreaking goodbyes: the season's defining moments
The Johto Journeys is a turning point for Ash's team, marked by two farewells fans still talk about today. In "Charizard's Burning Ambitions!", Ash discovers the Charicific Valley, a sanctuary where Charizard train to reach their full potential: knowing his partner will grow stronger there, he makes the painful decision to leave Charizard behind. A few episodes later, in "The Fire-ing Squad!", it is Squirtle who reunites with his old crew and chooses to return to duty as a firefighter.
