Branded Pokémon: DP Battle Dimension, the season picks up right where the Diamond and Pearl arc left off, and the stakes start climbing. Gym battles hit harder, rivals sharpen their edges, and an organization far more dangerous than Team Rocket finally steps out of the shadows.
Story Overview: The Road to Veilstone City
Fresh off his first Sinnoh victories, Ash sets out again with Pikachu, Dawn and Brock. The goal is Veilstone City and its Fighting-type Gym, the next step toward the Sinnoh League. Dawn, meanwhile, has her eyes on the Solaceon Contest and her second ribbon.
The trip covers a lot of ground: the slopes of Mt. Coronet, ancient ruins swarming with Unown, a sand-swept desert, a hot springs town whose water has mysteriously dried up, and a city of skyscrapers where powerful winds trap a whole flock of Pokémon. Every stop brings new friends, new captures and new evolutions, all building toward the big match against Gym Leader Maylene.
The Characters of DP Battle Dimension
Ash and a Team in Transition
Ash spends much of the season helping Chimchar heal after being abandoned by Paul and worn down by his harsh training style. His roster shifts too: in "Throwing the Track Switch," he trades Aipom to Dawn and gets Buizel in return, a Pokémon that lives for battle. Later, in "Riding the Winds of Change!," he catches a lovable Gligar that simply refuses to leave the group.
Dawn Between Contests and Gyms
Dawn has an emotional season. Her Aipom evolves into Ambipom in "Journey to the Unown!," but the Solaceon Contest goes badly in "Team Shocker!": her routine is so flashy that it outshines her own Pokémon, and she is knocked out in the first round. After that Solaceon loss, it takes her rival Zoey to help her find her confidence again. Later on, she even dares to challenge a Gym Leader, a first for her.
Brock, Paul and Some New Faces
Brock remains the steady anchor of the group, always ready to lend a hand to someone in trouble, as he does in "Tanks for the Memories!" Paul, Ash's ice-cold rival, keeps crossing his path and catches a Gliscor right in front of him. The season also introduces Reggie, Paul's kind-hearted older brother, who helps Ash train, and brings in Leona, another of Dawn's childhood friends, while Kenny returns for the Solaceon Contest.
Veilstone City, Maylene and the Cobble Badge
The heart of the season plays out in Veilstone City. In "Lost Leader Strategy!," Ash learns that Maylene has lost all faith in herself after a crushing defeat at Paul's hands, to the point of turning challengers away. Dawn is the one who gets her back on her feet: in "Crossing the Battle Line!," she takes on Maylene in a three-on-three match, and even though Lucario beats her, the battle reminds the Gym Leader why she loves to fight.
Then comes "A Triple Fighting Chance!," one of the most explosive Gym battles of the arc. Staravia, Chimchar and Buizel square off against Machoke, Meditite and Lucario. The final clash between Buizel and Lucario literally blows the roof off the Gym and ends in a double knockout. Impressed, Maylene still awards Ash the Cobble Badge, his third in Sinnoh.
Team Rocket and Team Galactic: Two Very Different Threats
Jessie, James and Meowth are still around, complete with disguises and outlandish mechs. Yet the season also gives them genuinely moving moments. In "Once There Were Greenfields," James leaves his loyal Cacnea with Gym Leader Gardenia, convinced she can raise it better than he can. In "Crossing Paths," it is Jessie's turn to let her Dustox go so it can follow its heart. Two goodbyes that reveal a surprisingly tender side of the trio.
On the other side, Team Galactic makes its official debut in "Enter Galactic!" Led by Commander Saturn, the group throws all of Veilstone City into chaos to steal its sacred meteorites. Ash, his friends, Maylene and Reggie manage to stop the heist, but the organization's larger plan keeps moving forward, setting up a serious threat for the rest of the journey.
Season 11 Highlights
Beyond the Gym battles, DP Battle Dimension packs in plenty of memorable episodes. In "The Keystone Pops!," an old monument gets knocked over by accident and releases an angry Spiritomb that an Aura Guardian once sealed away. In "Nosing 'Round the Mountain!," a Nosepass evolves into Probopass on Mt. Coronet, only to fall under Team Rocket's control. And in "Sleight of Sand!," a Hippowdon swallows Pachirisu while Butch and Cassidy, Jessie and James's longtime rivals, try to snatch it.
The season wraps up with "Pika and Goliath!," a nostalgic one: after losing to a trainer's Raichu, Pikachu is once again offered the Thunder Stone Ash has carried since Kanto. It turns down evolution one more time and wins the rematch with speed and smart strategy.
